ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH TRIO & JOE MORRIS QUARTET
Friday4 December 2015

Double concert featuring undisputed masters of European as well as American improvised music. ‘Staggering technique married to pure instinct’ (The Wire about the Alexander Von Schlippenbach Trio).

The Alexander Von Schlippenbach Trio stood at the foundation of European improvised music at the end of the 1960s. Each of their concerts is a completely new journey of discovery for the trio, yet recognizable elements remain. Evan Parker amazes with his endless note patterns created through circular breathing. The piano playing of Alexander Von Schlippenbach brings influences of Thelonious Monk’s jazz together with principles of Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve tone music. And unlike most drummers Paul Lovens does not repeat himself for one moment.

The second set will be performed by the Joe Morris Quartet, whose leader is a fixture in the New York creative music scene. He has a unique electric guitar style, direct, unhindered by theatrics and full of unexpected turns. In his breathtaking improvisations he takes example from adventurous saxophone players such as John Coltrane and Jimmy Lyons. One of his first European gigs was at the Bimhuis; now Downbeat praises him as ‘the preeminent free music guitarist of his generation’. ‘If Ornette Coleman were Jim Hall, he would be Joe Morris’ (Village Voice).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 till 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
