BIMHUIS Composition Assignment

Kaja Draksler

Extraordinary avant-garde pianist.

About Kaja Draksler

The classically trained Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler came to fruition as an improviser in Amsterdam. She took part in bands and ensembles including members of The Ex and ICP Orchestra. Draksler is interested in finding ways to merge composition with improvisation. In the spirit of Dutch improvised music, she is drawn to the idea of blurring or erasing stylistic and historical musical boundaries.

BIMHUIS Composition assignment

For her composition assignment, Draksler formed the new avant-garde ‘pop band’ matter 100. “Choosing these individuals is crucial to me,” she says. ‘It gives me inspiration and direction in writing the music. In matter 100 I move towards song art and sound; art of song when it comes to form, sound when it comes to indicating direction and idea. The group drew inspiration from the work of poet Dean Young and explored special timbres, including (prepared) hurdy gurdy and vocoder. In addition to Draksler, matter 100 consists of Lena Hessels, Marta Warelis, Andy Moor, Samo Kutin and Macio Moretti.

The BIMHUIS Composition Assignment is supported by Ammodo.
