Rough Diamonds

viool gecombineerd met elektronica, soulvolle vocalen, groove, improvisatie en soundscapes; dat is hoe je tj's pretty people het beste kan omschrijven. de muziek die ze spelen is een mix van de jaren 80 jazzfusion, moderne jazz, neo-soul en klassieke muziek. volgens bandleider teddy sicking is het doel van deze band om een vioolgeluid te introduceren in de hedendaagse jazzscene. arthur chapelle is een franse gitarist en componist uit lyon. hij won meerdere young talent-prijzen en trad al op jonge leeftijd op op grote franse podia zoals l’olympia, jazz à vienne en jazz sous les pommiers. met zijn nieuwe band, het arthur chapelle 5tet, verweeft hij zijn muzikale roots met moderne jazzinvloeden, en onderzoekt hij thema’s als verbondenheid, subjectieve beleving en de kracht van gemeenschap.

het conservatorium van amsterdam barst van jonge, bevlogen musici die allerlei interessante initiatieven ontplooien. vanaf 20 mei tot eind juni is ons podium het decor voor deze rough diamonds, met meerdere bands per avond, gratis toegankelijk voor publiek. vanavond treden op: het pedro mendes trio verkent via pedro’s composities nieuwe klankwerelden en sferen, met invloeden uit klassieke muziek, hiphop, vrije improvisatie en hedendaagse jazz. sinds hun oprichting in 2023 werkt het trio intensief aan een eigen geluid en speelt het regelmatig. in maart namen ze hun eerste muziek op, die binnenkort verschijnt. zoals de warme wind waarnaar ze vernoemd zijn, vervaagt calima grenzen en herschept het muzikale landschap. dit verhalende kwintet – winnaar van de keep an eye international jazz award 2025 – laat zich leiden door improvisatie, waarbij elke wending een verhaal vertelt en de muziek voortdurend in beweging blijft: gelaagd, meeslepend en altijd in ontwikkeling.

the conservatory of amsterdam is full of young, talented musicians with a drive to create and inspire. from may 20 till the end of june, every tuesday our stage will be the playground of these rough diamonds. every edition two promising bands will perform, entry is free. tonight al'dam connection and the matti klessaschek sextet will perform. al'dam connection is the project of jose diego sarabia muñoz, in which he connects his southern spanish roots from almería with the cultural influences of amsterdam. with top musicians from the amsterdam jazz scene, the band brings its own sound that blends hip-hop grooves, brazilian and latin rhythms and a traditional sound. each concert offers room for experimentation and new interpretations, with music full of creativity, expression and passion. writing music for the matti klessaschek sextet, the bandleader and saxophonist feels like weaving on a loom: each thread must be carefully placed - tight enough for cohesion, but with room for flexibility. the interweaving of vibraphone, guitar and piano - instruments with both melodic and harmonic functions - demands precision and allows freedom. matti weaves with attention, always with the players in mind. together with five fellow students from the conservatory of amsterdam, he brings the woven to life.

the conservatory of amsterdam is full of young, talented musicians with a drive to create and inspire. from may 20 till the end of june, every tuesday our stage will be the playground of these rough diamonds. every edition two promising bands will perform, entry is free. usoku usoku, formed in 2023 in amsterdam, is distinguished by the cultural diversity of its members, hailing from kazakhstan, south africa, mexico, france-tunisia, italy and the netherlands, among others. led by trombonist and composer willy bcw, the sextet effortlessly blends acoustic sounds with electronics, drawing inspiration from hip-hop, jazz and contemporary classical music. each musician brings their own traditions and perspectives, resulting in a fresh, layered sound that invites reflection and wonder. tzara the machine large ensemble venezuelan singer, songwriter and producer francisco garrido, under the pseudonym tzara the machine, writes music as a diary, a way of sorting through feelings such as shame, anger and depression. his melancholic, layered sound - inspired by björk, arca and animal collective, among others - combines imaginative melodies and harmonies with experimental production. together with a large ensemble, he creates an organic soundscape that remains intimate and vulnerable, despite the collective's no small amount of intensity.
