Trompettist Marquis Hill maakt grote indruk met de manier waarop hij jazz verbindt met spoken word, hiphop en de eigentijdse beats en breaks. In zijn Blacktet speelt hij met musici uit zijn geboortestad Chicago. Deze musici kunnen improviseren over duizelingwekkende grooves, maar vertalen ook standards en obscuurdere parels uit de jazzgeschiedenis naar de tegenwoordige tijd.
Marquis Hill is op dit moment een van de grote beloftes van de Amerikaanse jazz. Hij werd eerste in de Downbeat Critics Poll 2016 in de categorie Rising Star Trumpet en hij won de Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition 2014. Tegenwoordig woont hij in New York. Drie jaar lang speelde hij in de band van basgitaarlegende Marcus Miller. In het BIMHUIS speelde hij eerder met drummer/producer Makaya McCraven.
